Master of Sexual Health

Background

Human sexuality is part of the bedrock of society and is an integral facet of one’s identity. Sexuality in society is a product of our history, philosophy and multi-culturalism. More recently, politics and the media have had a dominant role to play. Appreciation and acceptance of the diversity of sexuality without discrimination should be prioritized. This requires a holistic approach and should translate into the education and legal system.

Sexual health is an integral component of preventive health and gender equality, both in Sri Lanka and the rest of the world. Comprehensive sexual health education in school and higher education curricula must be prioritized.

At present, sexual health is delivered through a variety of institutions and persons. However, in our society, this is likely to represent the tip of the iceberg of sexual health needs. In many settings, sexual health needs are neither addressed nor appropriately managed.
